Super Full Moon 17°20’ Scorpio at 8.46pm on 7 May 2020
The extraordinary events on earth at this time are mirrored by the unusual and unprecedented movements of the planets throughout 2020, triggered by the conjunction of Pluto and Saturn on 12 January.
May brings us the third full Super Moon in a row this year. A full Moon is the peak of the Moon cycle and occurs when the Moon is opposite the Sun; and from the Earth we can see the Moon fully illuminated by the light of the Sun. When the Moon in its orbit is closest to the Earth, a full Moon appears extremely large and is known as a Super Moon, intensifying its effects.
On 7 May at 8.46 pm AEST the Sun is at 17°20’ of Taurus, a fixed earth sign symbolising the physical world, the earth, nature, the body, the senses and sensuality as well as values and resources. During this time of being fixed in one place i.e. lockdown; many of us are slowing down, focusing on our physical health, cooking, gardening, walking, connecting with our environment and caring for ourselves and others. We may also be reassessing what is important to us, and realigning our value system to be more sustainable for ourselves and the planet in the long term.
The full Moon at 17°20’ of the fixed water sign Scorpio is exactly opposite the Sun. Full Moons signify heightened emotions and this full Moon is further intensified by being in the most sensitive and intense of the water signs. Scorpio asks us to dig deep, to penetrate below the surface, to unearth the mysteries and reveal the truth. Scorpio, ruled by Pluto, allows us to enter Pluto’s kingdom of the underworld, to explore taboos and things that we have sought to bury either personally or as a society. There we can also find riches and treasures, if we are willing confront the deepest parts of ourselves, release and transmute that which has been hidden in order to regenerate and awaken into our empowerment. Scorpio deals with issues of power and control and powerful secrets and mysteries can be revealed at this time.
This full Moon makes a connection with Neptune inspiring themes of love, creativity and compassion. Neptune, in connection with a Scorpio Moon, shows us the power of meeting life with love and compassion rather than with the illusion of control, allowing even deeper truths to be revealed.
The Scorpio full Moon is the Wesak Moon, celebrated in eastern traditions as a Buddhist festival. On an esoteric level the Buddha embodies the Principle of Light, and because of this illumination (full Moon) humanity was able to recognise the Christ as the embodiment of the Principle of Love. At Wesak these two great streams of energy combine and, illumined by the full Moon, become available to the earth, making it possible to tune into these higher frequencies and enabling an expansion of consciousness not possible at other times.
